Frequently Asked Questions

What is BMR?

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs to accomplish its most basic (basal) life-sustaining functions.

How is this different from TDEE?

BMR is your calorie needs at rest. Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) also includes calories burned from physical activity. Your TDEE will always be higher than your BMR unless you are completely sedentary.

Is this calculator accurate?

It uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is considered one of the most accurate methods for estimating BMR. However, it is still an estimate.

What this tool is for

The BMR calculator estimates basal metabolic rate, which is the energy your body may use at rest for basic functions. Enter age, sex, height, and weight to calculate an estimate using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation. BMR is not the same as total daily energy expenditure, because daily activity, exercise, digestion, medical conditions, and individual metabolism can change actual calorie needs. Use the result as a planning estimate, not a diagnosis or medical prescription.

Common tasks

Estimate resting calorie needs from basic body measurements.

  • Estimate resting calorie needs.
  • Use BMR as a starting point for TDEE.
  • Compare metric and imperial inputs.
  • Plan nutrition targets more carefully.

Privacy and limits
